Today's #KepnerQuote or Quote of the Day:

Most managers have resident values and concepts like these:

  • I am the leader. Don’t nobody challenge what I say. If I said it, it’s law!
  • I know more than you do. That’s why they pay me big bucks!
  • It’s a sign of major weakness to accept what someone lower on the corporate ladder says is right, particularly if I think somewhat differently.
  • My colleagues will think I’m an undignified wimp if I go around asking for advice from people who aren’t in their league.

But most managers also believe these things...

  • Knowledge is power
  • The more you know, the better decisions you can make
  • Everybody knows that it is better to be right than to be wrong

We have to defuse the former beliefs and strengthen the latter ones. We can't just say that the former ones are wrong. That kind of statement will be rejected. We have to help participants wrestle with the new ideas until they fit. We have to present them so they will arrive at these new conclusions:

  • I am the leader. I make the decision based on the best information I can get. When I say it, it's law!
  • I know more than you do. When I know what you know, in addition to what I already know, I am worth even more big bucks. Knowledge is power!
  • I can listen and collect information, then make up my own mind about what is right and what is wrong.
  • I can gather information without making a big deal of it, then make the right decision. My colleagues will think more of me if I'm right every time.
