LEADERSHIP ALIGNMENT: A Simple Test

Posted by John Case on Aug 19, 2012 6:11:00 PM

One of the simplest ways to determine whether you have alignment as an organization is to ask a single question of your management team (whether you’re part of the executive group that runs the company or a department head.)

The question?

If we were to gather a year from now to celebrate the accomplishment of a single goal, what would it be?

The answers should be written down…not given verbally. Once everyone is finished, have them read their answers. A lively discussion will probably follow.

The truth of the matter is that more often than not, there will be a wide range of answers. Don’t be discouraged. You are now one step ahead of organizations who don’t bother to ask.

The fact that the answers differ also usually indicates that resources are being deployed in many different directions, thus minimizing the impact of those resources.

Organizations (nor departments) cannot afford to have competing priorities.

Mixed messages to employees sap company energy and focus.

Once the various answers are given, settle on at least one goal that everyone agrees is the top priority.

It is a concrete first step in overcoming a lack of unity and purpose.
