Five men in an “IT CSI” boat – The beginning

What’s this all about, five men in an IT CSI boat? How ridiculous can you get!

Let me explain. Realistically it is the start of a journey and the launch of our blog on IT CSI (IT – Root Cause Analysis). So I suppose that to some degree explains why the boat analogy and the 5 men I mentioned. The 5 men relate to the characters in Thinking Dimensions Global who I will introduce shortly.

What brings the 5 men together in the boat? It is their passion for problem solving and the need to share their experiences which span collectively over 100 years in all the major continents and one or two islands (United Kingdom and Ireland). Truly our experiences cover some hair raising stuff which of course when we get down to it will add a bit of spice to the case studies not least of all to those from Africa and Australia.

I suppose I should start off with our most senior member (not in age but in experience) Mat-thys Fourie (Washington DC) is the founder of the organisation and with Chuck Kepner (San Francisco) probably forms the core of our development team in respect of the problem solving and decision making structures upon which a great deal of the IT CSI process is based. Mat-thys started the development of the widely used tools and processes in 1985 and over the years these have been further developed and refined to give us the product that is used so successfully today on a global basis.

Next in the introductions is Andrew Sauter from Sydney who has been a pioneer in testing and refining each of the IT CSI versions with continuous input from our clients. I know Andrew has many case studies that he will be happy to share after years in IT with multinational organisations and his role in helping them to deal effectively with incident and problem management.

We stay in the southern hemisphere to meet Adriaan du Plessis who when he is not busy running a very successful business in Johannesburg is accommodating various safaris on his game ranch. Adriaan’s forté has been in working with many of the large government and mining organisations in Southern Africa and aiding their business improvement and change management through the problem solving and decision making tools incorporated in IT CSI.

Back to the USA and we meet Bill Dunn in Washington DC, he and Mat-thys are almost neighbours and have been known to frequent a particular coffee shop on the outskirts of DC. Bill has worked closely with a large number of clients of the East Coast providing them with tailored processes to allow for more effective decision making and saving many valuable budget dollars.

And so to the last man in the boat, John Hudson, the author who is based just outside London where he has been involved in consulting on the IT side of Learning and Development for the last 6 years. John has worked closely with government and public companies in the development and tailoring of products and processes to answer their specific needs.

As you see we have quite a formidable crew to our boat and we hope in the foreseeable future to guide many of you through some of the “choppy waters” that we have experienced through product and client exposures. Our blogs will be shared out among the crew members in the months to come and we encourage you to become one of our crew mates. We hope to be able to pose some questions that you might have the answers to and also hope to be able to answer some of your queries and comments.

We look forward to growing into a more substantial boat and hopefully enlist a few more crew members.
