How to Avoid Risks Destroying Your Day!

You want to do what?!Risk

Human beings have no problem getting themselves out of trouble, but do have a major problem anticipating potential risks. The pitfall of modern business in most situations is that we are dealing with major new initiatives and constant changes, but we are not seeing the “blind spots”.

You can do all the best planning in the world, but you cannot control external forces that could impact your plan adversely. We have very good examples of public events such as the “Challenger” space craft explosion, recalling millions of cars for known defects, the Janet Jackson “wardrobe” malfunction, database breaches of personal information and many more.

The uncomfortable truth is that many, if not all of the public disasters that happened could have been avoided by doing a proper risk analysis and this is the same for in-house disasters that could have been prevented.

People normally work very hard to produce a good workable solution and they feel affronted when they get asked if they’ve done a risk analysis or asking asking, “what could go wrong”. This just does not seem to make sense seeing that the team spent countless hours designing and planning the solution – “Why would something go wrong?”.

“So, you want to look at risk? Really, after we painstakingly planned this?” is a major human pitfall that Business has to contend with. It will take a long time to educate business people to accept that Risk Analysis should be an integral part of the planning and implementation process. However, we can start small by asking, “What could go wrong?” in any of the following scenarios – anything that could go wrong in terms of:

> Integrating the new with the old? > Has your staff been trained?
> Ever done this before? > Impact on productivity?
> Health and safety? > Correct policies and procedures?
> Security? > Sensitive target dates?
> enough implementation time? > Resource availability?
> Quality requirements? > Vendor and customer alignement?
